NCADD has launched a major effort to raise that will help us to complete development of addiction courseware. We ask you to take a moment and read our story. We hope we can compel you to donate today and ask as many of your family members, friends and colleagues to join you.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 by January 2013. Please help us get there!
Everyone knows someone impacted by substance abuse or addiction. Maybe it’s your father, daughter, best friend from high school, fraternity brother, or little sister. All too often, we have also seen how difficult it is to get help. Why are our friends and families suffering as long as they do?
One reason is the shortage of trained and credentialed addiction professionals. There are many people who want to help; they just lack the training to do the job. Starting two years ago, we began developing leading-edge Web-based courses designed to bring the benefits of traditional instructor-led training to the desktop. Our training is delivered whenever and wherever needed, achieving the same level - or greater - of knowledge transfer as a student might gain in a classroom setting.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? There has never been enough treatment available for those who need it. People are dying while on waiting lists to get in, and others don’t even bother seeking treatment because they have heard how difficult it is to get in. Others enter programs only to be treated by counselors without the proper credentials.
On the positive side, the country has come to recognize that addiction treatment not only saves lives, but it also saves considerable dollars in the long term. Within two years, insurance companies will be required to cover treatment as part of their basic benefits packages. The reality is there is no room for these people to go. There are simply not enough counselors available, and there is no way to train new counselors quickly enough - until now.
There is no one else in the world attempting to do what we are doing – provide every course online that an individual needs to become certified.
WHAT WE SEEK MONEY FOR: Up to now we’ve put our own money into a process that included course development, course production, web-related efforts, marketing, and more. We have launched 35 out of the 45 courses required to become certified as an addiction professional. We believe so strongly in this effort that we have nearly drained our agency’s cash reserves to complete this project. The large donors we expected to eventually hear about the project and fund us have never materialized. Our issue is simply not sexy enough to generate the interest of corporations, who would rather be seen supporting women with breast cancer over alcoholics and drug addicts. Without the help of individual donors such as you, we will be unable to complete the project.
WHY SHOULD YOU HELP? Look around to your family and friends; remember those whose lives have been ruined by addiction and the young people getting hooked on prescription drugs because they think they’re safe. You are not helping us; you are helping them.
